Journey to the Past: An Exploration of Gaya's Glory through Gimhae

by K culture information 2023. 6. 17.

"Travel brings power and love back into your life." Rumi's words echo in my mind as I set forth to embark on a journey to Gimhae, a city that is a spectacular blend of history, culture, and natural beauty

This city was once the heartland of Gaya, a confederacy that left indelible imprints on Korean history and culture. This travelogue will serve as your compass, guiding you to the highlights of Gimhae, unfolding the city's unique tale.

Gimhae as a tourist destination has various charms, starting with 'Gimhae Gaya Theme Park' with the theme of records and myths related to Gaya, 'Jinyeonggyeong Railway Museum', which was created with the opening of the military railway, and 'Yeonji Park', a famous place for flower viewing. Among them, I think the most effective way to travel to Gimhae is the 'Gayawangdo Gimhae Stamp Tour'.

The 'Gayawangdo Gimhae Stamp Tour' can be participated in two ways: passport and mobile. You can visit the certified location to get a stamp or collect stamps via mobile through the Gimhae Tourism Portal. There is an advantage in that you can look around Gimhae more widely and deeply because the two methods of receiving stamps do not overlap. If you stamp 3 or more stamps, you can get a souvenir, and if you collect all the stamps, you can get a Grand Slam certification badge.

This is not the only attraction of Gimhae. At the 'Clayarch Gimhae Art Museum', you can experience Gimhae's art while appreciating a variety of pottery works, from traditional to modern pottery. In the 'Hwapocheon Wetland Ecological Park', you can experience the natural mood and ecosystem and have a healing time. This trip, which encompasses the history of Gaya and the present age of Gimhae, awaits you with various stories about Gimhae. Are you ready for a trip to Gimhae, which has the dazzling history of Gaya?

King of Gaya's Kimhae Stamp Tour

My adventure started with the King of Gaya's Kimhae Stamp Tour. This exciting activity features 18 different stamp authentication locations, each promising a distinct and unforgettable experience. The best part? The travel destinations do not overlap, presenting an opportunity to explore the breadth and depth of Gimhae. In every place you visit, collect a stamp, a memory imprinted on paper. As you collect three or more stamps, you receive souvenirs that encapsulate the city's spirit, like a piece of Gimhae to take home. To those intrepid enough to complete the entire journey, a Grand Slam certification badge awaits as a testament to their feat. This tour, a fun amalgamation of travel and treasure hunt, intensifies the thrill of exploration, making the journey even more gratifying.

Jinyoung Station Railway Museum

The next stop was the Jinyoung Station Railway Museum, a living testament to Gimhae's modern and railway history. Originally built in 1905 by the Japanese colonial government, the station now serves as a museum, preserving the legacy of the past while adapting to the demands of the present. As you step into the museum, a sense of nostalgia is palpable. Exhibits of rail-related artifacts and installations, including the 'Mugunghwa-ho' train that was actually in service, transport you back in time, offering a glimpse into the city's fascinating railway history.

Tomb of King Suro

No visit to Gimhae can be complete without paying homage to the tomb of King Suro, the founding father of Garakguk. The founder's legend, his birth from a golden egg, is as enigmatic as the kingdom he established. The tomb's grandeur, with its fish-patterned double fish gate and Sun Gate on the stele, hints at the glorious era of Gaya. The tomb is nestled in a vast park, providing a serene setting for a leisurely walk. The hush that surrounds the place reverberates with tales of the bygone era, making your visit an almost transcendental experience.

Clay Arc Museum of Art

Gaya, renowned for its iron, was also a cradle of earthenware culture, a legacy that continues in the Clay Arc Museum of Art. The museum, aptly named after 'clay', signifying earth and 'arc', symbolizing architecture, serves as a platform for showcasing Gaya's ceramic prowess. The ongoing exhibition, 'New Rock', provides an opportunity to explore how natural weathering transforms plastic, a medium was often seen as permanent and immutable, into a form of rock. This unique artistic exploration is as much a nod to Gaya's past as it is an interpretation of the present.

Hwapocheon Wetland Ecological Park

From the artistic wonders of the museum, I ventured into the natural splendor of the Hwapocheon Wetland Ecological Park. This park, stretching across a sprawling 3.1 million square meters, stands as a testament to successful environmental restoration

Gimhae, a city that once thrived as the capital of the Gaya confederacy, has preserved its historical charm while evolving into a modern metropolis. Each monument, park, and museum in Gimhae is a storyteller, recounting tales of a glorious past, and narrating the city's journey into the future. A visit to Gimhae is not merely a journey through a city; it is an exploration through time, a celebration of culture, and an experience that stays etched in your memory, calling you back to discover more.

For any queries regarding your visit to Gimhae, you can reach out to Gimhae City Hall's Tourism Division at 055-330-4448. Remember, the city awaits to unfold its myriad stories to those who seek them. So pack your bags and step into the heartland of Gaya, into the city of Gimhae.
